Once the trees grow their roots, they will grow up to two feet a year.
SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Ponderosa is planting 11,000 ponderosa pine seedling trees on Saturday and Sunday.
Spokane Ponderosa said they’ve been planting trees for almost 10 years, and planted nearly 100,000 trees in the Spokane area. The organization said their goal is to make Spokane healthier and more beautiful with their planting.
This weekend’s planting was kicked off with 4,000 ponderosa pine seedlings at the Pines Road exit on I-90 eastbound.
“I love to restore things and this used to be a ponderosa pine forest. The more we can get it back like that in areas that have been mowed down if you will, the more we help our urban canopy goals for the city,” said Mike Petersen, director of Spokane Ponderosa
Petersen said there are many benefits once these trees grow tall and large. Trees will help reduce heat in the area they are shading, help mitigate air pollution, and reduce costs for fertilizers.
Spokane Ponderosa says they hope to plant trees throughout the year in areas where trees are needed.
