The Green Penny vintage to open above Sushi Masa

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO)–A popular downtown Sioux Falls restaurant is getting a new retail neighbor for the first time. A look inside the unique vintage retail store coming to the 2nd floor of Sushi Masa in tonight’s Your Money Matters.

“It seems to always be busy, especially when the weather’s nice,” Sioux Falls shopper Cari Schroeder said.

It’s one of the busiest streets for walking and shopping in all of Sioux Falls.

“I just like to enjoy the beautiful weather, the people around, the beautiful ambiance it’s lovely and charming,” Sioux Falls shopper Yrene Parsons said.

“I just like to walk around and pop into the boutiques and window shops, they switch it up all the time so it keeps me entertained on my breaks,” Schroeder said.

It’s why the owner of the Green Penny wanted to bring her business to Phillips Avenue.

“I’ve been doing mostly through Instagram, and then I’ve had a number of pop ups over the years that have been successful that have kind of shown me that maybe a brick and mortar is what I would like the most,” The Green Penny owner Aftyn Janzen said.

Aftyn Janzen says customers have resonated with her love for thrifting for many reasons.

“It can be good on the budget as well as the environment,” Janzen said. “There is the durability and longevity of vintage clothing cannot be compared to anything that is on the market today.”

It’s also how she feels about the unique location she’s found to house her vintage store, the historic apartment right above Sushi Masa on Phillips Avenue.

“I think it is the first time the public will be coming up here. It was a photography shop in the past,” Janzen said.

Now it’s home to her vintage home goods and clothing.

“I have a selection of clothes for all sizes, which I’m very adamant to provide because I know a lot of vintage skews smaller, so I have kids and all adult sizes. I also have home goods and some small furniture will be available at the store as well,” Janzen said.

A concept frequent Phillips Avenue shoppers are excited to try in this brand new retail space.

“I’m always looking for a good deal so if they’re unique and affordable I would be up for that,” Schroeder said.

“I think Sioux Falls is getting a lot of diversity of people and tastes and fashions, so I think that will be really great,” Parsons said.

The Green Penny is still in the process of moving hundreds of vintage clothing items into its new space. The store’s grand opening is set for Friday, June 7th with regular store hours from noon to 7pm Thursdays through Sundays.
