Suki Waterhouse‘s second album is on the way. On Thursday, the musician released the rocky single “Supersad” as she announced that she’ll release her double album Memoir of a Sparklemuffin on Sept. 13.
“Feels surreal to finally be able to bring this world to you that I’ve been living in for the past year & even more insane to be touring these songs I love to much in the fall,” Waterhouse wrote on Instagram alongside the cover art, which sees Waterhouse in a white, spiderweb-emulating dress in the middle of an ethereal forest. The album’s title is inspired by the peculiarly-named spider species.
“I came across the Sparklemuffin — which is wildly colored, does this razzle-dazzle dance, and its mate will cannibalize it if she doesn’t approve of the dance,” Waterhouse explained in a statement. “It’s a metaphor for the dance of life we’re all in. The title felt hilarious, ridiculous, and wonderful to me.”
The Daisy Jones & the Six actress worked with Eli Hirsch to executive produce the double album, which features a total of 18 songs, including tracks such as “Model, Actress, Whatever,” “Nonchalant,” “Legendary,” and “Could’ve Been a Star.” It also features previously released songs “My Fun,” “OMG,” and “To Love.” About “Supersad,” Waterhouse said, “I tried to write a nineties song you could hear playing at the mall in Clueless or as an opening track for Legally Blonde.”
She spoke to Rolling Stone in January about the “anxious state” she feels in when she’s making a song.
“You always feel like you are on the edge of something,” Waterhouse told Rolling Stone in January. “It’s really about going against the intellect and into the instinct of the song. That’s what I find so fascinating about writing. It’s really the most tedious, delicate process, so dependent on whether you can get out of your own way that day.”
