Corrie star Alison King discusses Carla Connor finding love again

Coronation Street star Alison King has shared her thoughts on the possibility of her character Carla Connor finding love again.

Carla made the decision to end her marriage to Peter Barlow at the end of last year, after she realised that the couple could no longer give each other what they needed. Her decision meant Peter decided to leave Weatherfield behind.

With Carla having been single since their separation, Alison has opened up about whether she thinks that her character could soon have her eye on a new partner.

No, I don’t think she’s ready for another relationship at all and she’s definitely not got her eye on anybody,” she said. “I don’t think she’s thought twice about it. I think it’s the last thing on her mind.”

Despite this, some fans have speculated that recent episodes of the soap appear to have shown some chemistry between Carla and DS Lisa Swain, after the pair made peace following Roy Cropper’s release from prison.

It has already been confirmed that Carla will be offering work experience to Swain’s teenage daughter, but it is not yet clear whether their relationship will develop any further.

Alison also spoke about the tough 2024 that Carla has endured so far after Peter’s exit was followed the unexpected arrival of her nephew Bobby Crawford and Roy’s imprisonment, saying that she thinks her character is “coping pretty well”.

“She’s in control of her life again, she’s fiery and she’s not taking any nonsense from anybody,” she teased.

Alison also spoke about Carla’s relationship with Bobby, revealing that she would love to see her character forging even more family connections.

“That’s what she’s been missing especially since Michelle left, she likes having that family link,” she explained.

“She just keeps having to remind him to press the recall button for things he’s done wrong because he’s got no learning curve. We need some more new Connors, I think.”

With Alison having played out a number of challenging storylines with Carla over the last 18 years including addiction and relationship breakdowns, she revealed that she loves playing a character with “so many sides to her”.

“Ultimately her core is fiery and fearless. She is vulnerable, she can be frightened of things but she attacks things face on which ultimately gives me brilliant storylines because she either gets into trouble or she does the right thing,” she said.

“The viewers understand that she’s going to go off the rails, but she’ll come back again. It’s just been such a lovely thing to be able to get to play, all those vulnerable situations with the psychosis, through her addiction and the grief she’s had to deal with…

“To be able to show those from a strong woman’s perspective has been brilliant.”

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
