The first day I stepped into the dance studio, I was preparing to be Miss Mississippi. The first day I signed up for college, I was preparing to be Miss Mississippi,” Williams said.During the preliminary rounds, Williams won two preliminary awards: the first for evening wear and the second for talent. Williams has been a dancer her entire life, including being a part of the dance team at Mississippi State. Her passion for dance and movement is so strong, it’s her community service initiative: Make a Move. Williams describes her platform as a way to get students moving, so they can focus in the classroom. “It’s the best way I can incorporate what I know best with what they should know best, which is movement and healthy habits and making sure they have ways of getting their energy out so they can focus in class,” Williams said.Behind the crown and sash, Williams is an educator, and like so many educators in the state, her passion is to help Mississippi students thrive. “My ultimate goal is to be a superintendent, because I do see changes that can be made and are possible and realistic for our state to grow even better,” Williams said. “I’ve been working on some legislation with a few representatives, and I’m excited to get that rolling out in the next session. It has a lot to do with students and scholarship opportunities.”Williams said being a part of the Miss America Organization has given her the confidence to try new things and to overcome any challenge. It’s also helped fund her education. “I’m the first woman in my family to graduate college, and I’m doing it debt-free because of Miss America and because of Miss Mississippi. That’s one thing I always say to young girls that are asking about it,” Williams said. Williams said there are so many other benefits to her time in the Miss Mississippi program.”Another reason is the life skills you learn from it, preparing for interviews and preparing to share controversial opinions in an educated way that makes it not as controversial is so important in today’s society,” Williams said. Now that she’s won the state title, Williams is heading to Miss America. She said she wants to be able to use her experience to help move Mississippi forward. “The thing I’m most excited for is getting to meet the representatives from every state. Mississippi is its own place, but getting to understand what it’s like in Washington or Kentucky or even Delaware; understanding how our states are so different but our stories can be so similar,” Williams said.Williams will head to Orlando in January to compete for the title of Miss America.
