How to keep your spring and summer flowers thriving this season

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Who doesn’t love flowers? They look great and smell beautiful. But with so many varieties to choose from, it’s beneficial to know what’s best for your living space.

  • When selecting flowers, know whether it’s an annual or a perennial. Annuals die after one season and need to be replanted annually. Perennials come back every year and only need to be planted once.
  • Always look for plant tags for directions on how to keep it alive when it comes to necessary sun, water and space it needs.
  • Full sun means at least six hours, but there is some wiggle room.

“It’s going to depend on what time of day that you get your sun. So if you’re only going to get four or five hours, but you have that hot afternoon sun, go ahead and plant it. They’ll love it,” said Jeff Wallitsch, of Wallitsch Gardens. “But if you’re only getting your four to five hours in the morning, some of your full sun plants they’ll probably be okay, but they may not flower as much.”

If you lose the tag, fear not. There are many apps that you can download to tell you how to care for the plant. If you have an iPhone, all you need is your camera.

  • Take a picture with your iPhone
  • Click on the encircled “I” at the bottom of the screen
  • It will turn into an encircled leaf
  • Click on “Look Up Plant”
  • View results
