A video of some mysterious findings during a bedroom renovation has gone viral on TikTok.

The clip posted by @reno.vatingupnorth on TikTok has garnered 1.7 million views since it was shared on June 9. It showcases a series of bizarre and perplexing elements in a home’s spare bedroom.

A message overlaid on the clip reads, “Things we found out by ripping out our spare bedroom that don’t make sense.” The video then reveals several unusual features in the room, from a lock on the outside of a door to drawings behind the walls.

The post comes as home renovation spending has increased recently, with the median expense surging by 60 percent between 2020 ($15,000) and 2023 ($24,000), according to a survey of U.S. homeowners conducted by home design website Houzz.

The survey found that just over half of renovating homeowners (51 percent) reported spending $25,000 or more on their renovations in 2023, up from 37 percent in 2020.

Kitchens remain the most commonly renovated interior room (29 percent), followed by guest bathrooms (27 percent) and primary bathrooms (25 percent).

‘Creepy’

The viral video begins with a view of a chain lock on the outside of the bedroom door, raising questions about its intended use.

The clip later reveals a shower in the corner of the room. This fixture is particularly strange because it lacks inlet pipes and only has waste pipes, suggesting it was never functional.

A note across the footage later says, “Thinking this cable is a TV antenna but it’s hardwired audio from CCTV that has been installed in the room.”

Adding to the eerie atmosphere, a person is shown uncovering “creepy drawings” on the walls of the bedroom.

A later message across the clip also reads: “The electrician being surprised our house hasn’t burnt down due to the DIY electrics from the previous owner,” noting the potentially dangerous electrical work previously done in the house.

A caption shared with the post asks: “What do you think went on in this room. We’ve got our suspicions!!”

The unusual discoveries have left TikTok users speculating on the previous owner’s intentions for the room.

“This feels like someone was imprisoned here,” one person commented. “Someone was def held captive in that room,” a TikTok user named Katie wrote.

“Yea…that room is crime scene,” Danielle York commented.

“Terrible things happened in this room….” TikToker Ms.Vinsmoke wrote.

“I don’t wanna know what happened there,” another person commented.

Others believe there are less sinister explanations for the unusual features in the room.

“I know everyone is thinking some crime was committed here,” TikToker Drew Tyler commented. “Honestly I think it would make more sense that a disabled child/adult lived here and the lock and camera was for their protection?”

“Or perhaps an elderly family member who needed memory care,” Ann Marie commented.

“Could be someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia,” TikTok user Albeen said, explaining that the home’s previous owner installed a lock on their door so that their elderly mother wouldn’t “wander off at night.”
