Internet defends woman’s home renovation after viral backlash—”Stunning”

The clip was shared by Laura (@_laurahome) and has amassed over 573,000 views since it was shared on May 26.

Messages overlaid on the video highlight some of the backlash the poster had received, such as “you’ve ruined that house, you should have left it how it was.”

Another note reads: “Buys old country home then proceeds to turn it into a new build.”

The video later reveals the final result of the renovation, which features several chic and modern touches with a minimalist feel.

The post comes as money spent on home renovation was reported to have surged in the past three years, with the median spend increasing by 60 percent between 2020 ($15,000) and 2023 ($24,000), according to a survey of 32,615 users, including 17,713 renovating U.S. homeowners, conducted by Houzz, a home design website.

More than half of renovating homeowners (51 percent) were reported to have spent $25,000 or more on their renovations in 2023, a rise from 37 percent in 2020, the survey found.

Living room projects were popular last year, with one in five homeowners (21 percent) having undertaken them. But kitchens remain as the most commonly renovated interior room (29 percent), followed by guest bathrooms (27 percent) and primary bathrooms (25 percent), according to the survey.

‘This Is Literally My Dream’

A note across the viral clip reads: “If you’re going to destroy an old house like that you should’ve bought another new build.”

“Most of them are gorgeous. Let me guess, you turned it into an open concept gray nightmare,” says a subsequent message.

A caption shared with the post simply reads: “Ok.”

The video shows the progression of the renovation before highlighting the home’s various new features, from a marble kitchen countertop and a bathroom sink made from a slab of rock to its beige and cream furnishings.
