WELL, ONE OF THE COOLEST THINGS ABOUT ABILITY KC IS THAT THEY OFFER INDIVIDUALIZED THERAPIES FOR THOUSANDS OF KIDS EVERY YEAR. AND IT’S ALL PROVIDED UNDER ONE ROOF. IT’S ONE OF THE REASONS WHY ABILITY KC IS HELPING KIDS THRIVE WITH THERAPY. NICE. THROWING BASEBALLS MIGHT SEEM LIKE A NORMAL ACTIVITY FOR MOST KIDS, BUT FOR HUNTER, THIS IS A BIG STEP. GOOD RELEASE ON THE FIRST DAY OF THIRD GRADE, HUNTER’S LIFE CHANGED. HE WAS OUTSIDE HANGING OUT WITH HIS FRIENDS. HE WAS IN THE AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMING AND HE HAD A STROKE. THAT MOMENT MARKED THE START OF A LONG UPHILL BATTLE. PHYSICAL THERAPY, OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY AND THE FINANCIAL STRAIN OF IT ALL. NICE JOB HUNTER, HIS DOCTOR AT CHILDREN’S MERCY RECOMMENDED ABILITY CASEY, BECAUSE THEY’RE THE BEST TO WORK WITH A BRAIN INJURIES CHAMPION. HUNTER HAS BEEN WORKING WITH ABILITY CASEY FOR A LITTLE OVER TWO YEARS, REGAINING MOST OF HIS MOBILITY AND SOME OF HIS COGNITIVE FUNCTION. I USED TO BE IN A WHEELCHAIR AND NOW I’M STANDING WITH ACTIVITIES OF DAILY LIVING. I HAD TO START FROM BASICALLY A BABY LEVEL TO WHERE I WHERE I’M AT RIGHT NOW. WE ARE WORKING ON THAT PINCH IN MORE FINE MOTOR SKILLS. WE HAD VERY LIMITED MOVEMENT IN HIS RIGHT ARM. HE HAD SOME SHOULDER MOVEMENT, BUT NOT A LOT OF NO GRASP. HE COULDN’T GRASP ANYTHING. EACH TIME THAT HE CAME BACK, WE SLOWLY PROGRESSED, INCREASING HIS MOVEMENT, INCREASING HIS FUNCTION. UM, OVERALL, HE’S GROWN IN CONFIDENCE SO MUCH OVER THE YEARS. IT’S REALLY EXCITING TO SEE HIM. ABILITY CASEY IS THE METRO’S ONLY ALL IN ONE REHABILITATION SERVICE OFFERING PHYSICAL AND OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY AS WELL AS SPEECH, PSYCHOLOGICAL, AQUATIC AND VISION THERAPIES. IT’S WHY HUNTER IS MAKING SO MUCH PROGRESS. WOW, THAT WAS IMPRESSIVE. BUT COMMUNITY SUPPORT IS NEEDED TO KEEP GOING. UNFORTUNATELY, SOMETIMES INSURANCE DOESN’T ALWAYS PAY FOR THE CARE THAT THEY NEED, BUT WE ARE LIMITED SOMETIMES. IF INSURANCE WON’T PAY FOR THERAPY AND IT’S SOMETHING THAT THEY REALLY NEED, NICE CATCH FOR HUNTER, HIS GOAL IS CLEAR HE WANTS TO GET BACK TO PLAYING BASEBALL AGAIN. MY HAND WASN’T EVEN OPEN AND, UM, AND NOW IT CAN. REPORTING IN KANSAS CITY, DARRIUS WHITE KMBC NINE NEWS A PRETTY INCREDIBLE ABILITY.
