KENDALL, MILWAUKEE’S MAYOR, AND THE GOVERNOR ARE ALSO SOUNDING OFF ABOUT THE DISTRICT’S MONEY MESS IN THE MISSING FINANCIAL REPORTS ARE JUST THE LATEST IN A STRING OF MISSTEPS. THE STATE JUST PULLED FEDERAL FUNDING FROM THE DISTRICT’S HEAD START PROGRAM, AND THE SCHOOL BOARD IS CONSIDERING BUDGET AND TEACHER CUTS. JUST MONTHS AFTER VOTERS HAVE APPROVED HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN A REFERENDUM. THE TIMING AND THE NEWS IS NOT SITTING WELL WITH THE COMMUNITY, WHO DID NOT HOLD BACK AT LAST NIGHT’S SCHOOL BOARD MEETING. I PROVIDE ALL DAY AND I’M A FIGHT ALL NIGHT. SCENES FROM THURSDAY NIGHT’S MILWAUKEE PUBLIC SCHOOL BOARD MEETING YELLING SHAME, SHAME, SHAME, POLICE INTERVENTION AND SIGNS SAYING NO CONFIDENCE IN MNPS ADMINISTRATORS AND HASHTAG FIRE. MOSLEY, AS IN DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT KEITH POSLEY. BOARD MEMBERS WERE SUPPOSED TO BE VOTING ON NEXT YEAR’S $1.5 BILLION BUDGET, BUT PEOPLE IN THE CROWD DEMANDED ANSWERS ABOUT THE DISTRICT’S MISSING FINANCIAL REPORTS. YOU WILL NOT SHUT US UP, THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION REVEALED LAST WEEK. MNPS HAS YET TO HAND OVER KEY FINANCIAL DATA TO THE STATE, ACCORDING TO A LETTER FROM DPI ADDRESSED TO SUPERINTENDENT POSLEY. SOME OF THE DOCUMENTS ARE MORE THAN EIGHT MONTHS LATE. NOW THE STATE IS THREATENING TO WITHHOLD MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN FUNDING. AM I CONCERNED? HELL YES GOVERNOR TONY EVERS WEIGHED IN FRIDAY. FRANKLY, IT DOESN’T LOOK GOOD. DPI TELLS 12 NEWS THEY USE THE FINANCIAL REPORTS TO DISTRIBUTE MONEY TO THE MORE THAN 400 SCHOOL DISTRICTS STATEWIDE. AN NPS FAILURE TO PROVIDE ITS REPORTS IS NEGATIVELY IMPACTING EVERY OTHER DISTRICT IN THE STATE. WHEN IS THE LAST TIME YOU STEPPED FOOT IN THE CLASSROOM ROOM WITHOUT YOUR POSSE? WITH THE SUPERINTENDENT? POSLEY DID NOT ADDRESS THE CROWD OR THE MEDIA AT THURSDAY’S MEETING. HE ALSO REFUSED OUR REQUESTS FOR AN INTERVIEW FOR A SECOND DAY. 12 NEWS, POLITICAL DIRECTOR MATT SMITH ASKED MILWAUKEE MAYOR CAVALIER JOHNSON IF HE STILL HAS FAITH IN POSEY SERVING AS SUPERINTENDENT. LOOK, I WANT TO MAKE SURE BECAUSE MY FOCUS IS ON THE KIDS, I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THE KIDS IN MILWAUKEE PUBLIC SCHOOLS HAVE ALL THE RESOURCES THAT THEY THAT THEY CAN. AND I’M HOPEFUL THAT, YOU KNOW, KEITH AND THE SCHOOL BOARD ARE ABLE TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN. THAT’S NOT MY CALL, KENDALL, AS YOU MENTIONED, THIS SURFACED A COUPLE MONTHS AFTER VOTERS APPROVED A $252 MILLION REFERENDUM. RIGHT. AND ACCORDING TO THAT LETTER FROM THE DPI, THE DISTRICT KNEW IT WAS MONTHS LATE IN SUBMITTING THAT FINANCIAL DATA TO THE STATE WHILE ASKING VOTERS FOR THAT REFERENDUM MONEY. WE’VE MADE SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO ASK SUPERINTENDENT POSEY AND THE BOARD OF GOVERNANCE WHO CONDUCTS THOSE FISCAL ANALYZES, WHY THIS WAS NOT DISCLOSED TO VOTER
