More Open Class fair information, new recipes

GREENSBURG – As we finish up the Open Classes for the fair, it is time to get to work on those exhibits!

Photography

Class 1 – landscape – black and white

Class 2 – landscape – color

Class 3 – flowers – black and white

Class 4 – flowers – color

Class 5 – babies up to 1 yr. of age – black and white

Class 6 – babies up to 1 year of age – color

Class 7 – people – black and white

Class 8 – people – color

Class 9 – animals – black and white

Class 10 – animals- color

Class 11 – other photos – black and white

Class 12 other photos – color

Photos must be taken within the last 12 months

One entry per person per Class

Photos must be 5 by 7 inchdes and must be matted no larger than 8 by 10

Flowers and Garden

Must be grown by the exhibitor showing the flowers

Class 1 – zinnias

Class 2 – marigolds

Class 3 – roses

Class 4 – garden arrangement, adult age 18 and up

Class 5 – garden arrangement, ages 8 – 17

Class 6 – miniature arrangement, container 6 inches or less in size

Class 7 – roadside beauty 9 flowers and greenery from the roadside, field or woods

Horticultural Specimen

Class 1 – hydrangeas

Class 2 – gladioli

Class 3 – lillies – dau lily

Class 4 – other lillies

Class 5 – sunflower

Class 6 – roses

Plants

Class 1 – blooming plants – must be blooming

(a – outdoor plant b. indoor plant)

Class 2 – foliage plant

Class 3 – succulents

Class 4 – patio plants

Class 5 – fairy garden – adult

Class 6 – fairy garden garden – age 8 – 17

Class 7 – potted herb plant

Garden

Class 1 beans, green snap 12 pods on plate

Class 2 – potatoes 5

Class 3 – onions 5 on plate – leave 3 inch stem and trim root end

Class 4 tomatoes 5 red or green

Class 5 – squash 1

Class 6 head of cabbage – leave outer leaves on

Class 7 – cumbers – 3

Class 8 peppers,any kind 3

Class 9 – collection display in basket 5 to 7 varieties

Cookie Contest – Thursday, July 11

All entries must have a complete recipe

Display cookies on a plate and put in plastic bag

Class 1- bar cookies

Class 2 – chocolate chip

Class 3 – drop cookies

Class 4 – cut – out cookies, iced and decorated

Class 5 no-bake- any variety

Remember, booklets with all times and details are available at the Decatur County Extension Office.

Rhubarb Bread

1 1/3 c. packed brown sugar

2/3 c. oil

1 egg

1 tsp. vanilla

1 c. buttermilk

2 1/2 c. flour

3/4 tsp. salt

3/4 tsp. cinnamon

1 tsp. soda

2 c. finely diced fresh rhubarb

1/2 c. chopped nuts

Combine sugar and oil, blend in egg, vanilla and buttermilk. Combine flour, salt, cinnamon and baking soda. add to moist ingredients, stir in rhubarb and nuts.

Put in 2 well greased 8 by 4 inch loaf pans. Bake at 350 degrees about 45 minutes. Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pan.

Spinach Rice Salad

1 c. rice

1/2 c.Italian salad dressing

1 T.. soy sauce

1 tsp. sugar

2 c. fresh spinach, shredded

1/2 c. celery sliced

1/2 c. green onions sliced

1/3 c. bacon cooked and crumbled

Cook rice according to package directions. Transfer to large bowl and cool slightly. Combine dressing, soy sauce and sugar. Stir into warm rice. Cover and chill. Before serving, stir remaining into chilled rice.
