New Royal Oak restaurant Cafe de Olla offers a taste of Mexico City

Royal Oak has no shortage of Mexican restaurants, yet I was excited to hear of a new one opening within an existing restaurant this spring.

Cafe de Olla is serving a simple menu of Mexican entrees, appetizers, cocktails and desserts inside Cafe Muse, a longstanding, chef-driven staple of Royal Oak’s dining scene that is currently only serving breakfast and brunch. With Cafe de Olla serving dinner (plus lunch on Tuesdays), it gives both businesses a chance to make the most of the space at 418 S. Washington in the heart of downtown Royal Oak.

Owner and chef Ara Sotelo has done catering and cooking classes for both kids and adults, but Cafe de Olla is her first restaurant. She said she wanted to open a place in the Royal Oak area that served authentic Mexican dishes like she grew up eating in Mexico City, where she’s from. She moved to Michigan in 2003.
