Michael Edward Goldschmidt, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and esteemed professor, passed away at home May 24, 2024. Born in Wichita, Kansas, Michael dedicated his life to sustainable architecture, education, and family. He had a deep, personal commitment to sustainability because – in his words – “somebody had to do something.”
Michael graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Architecture from Kansas State University in 1986, followed by a Master of Architecture (2003) and a Master of Green Building (2014) from San Francisco Institute of Architecture. He began his career at Peckham and Wright Architects in Columbia, Missouri, before bravely founding his own architectural firm in 1992.
In 2001, Michael joined the University of Missouri as a faculty member in the Department of Architectural Studies. In addition to teaching, he was a State Housing and Interior Design Specialist for MU Extension. He served as the director of the USDA/HUD National Healthy Homes Partnership starting in 2014, earning recognition for his expertise in ecological architecture and healthy living environments.
Throughout his career, Michael received numerous awards, including Betty Ann Cortelyou Faculty Scholar at MU. He held certifications with American Institute of Architects (AIA); Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED); Council for Interior Design Qualification (CIDQ); and United States Green Building Council (USGBC).
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Lois Goldschmidt. He is survived by his wife, Lisa, of Columbia; son, Benjamin (Morgan), Pittsburgh, PA; daughters, Sarah Moss (John), Columbia; Meagan Hill (Isaac Ling), Portland, OR; grandchildren, Iyanna and John Moss; brothers, Steven (Chesterfield, MO) and Andrew (Rockville, MD); and his cats, Izzy, Maude, and Cardi.
Michael’s dedication to his family, students, and sustainable architecture was profound. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his legacy will continue through the lives he touched and the sustainable world he helped build.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Friends of Rock Bridge Memorial State Park (FoRB) or American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
