Tom Hanks is one of Hollywood’s most beloved stars and films like Forrest Gump and Big are some of his greatest performances.

The upcoming drama, Here, will be the fifth time that Hanks and Zemeckis have teamed up for a movie. The official synopsis for the film describes it as an “original film about multiple families and a special place they inhabit. The story travels through generations, capturing the human experience in its purest form for a tale of love, loss, laughter and life.” The film will reportedly use de-aging technology for both Hanks and Wright, which is becoming more prevalent in films and television as the years have gone on. The new technology offers yet another tool for directors to effectively pull off stories that they may not have been able to in the past, and according to Zemeckis, the technology was absolutely necessary to telling his story. “I’ve always been attracted to technology that helps me to tell a story,” Zemeckis said. “With Here, the film simply wouldn’t work without our actors seamlessly transforming into younger versions of themselves.”

Zemeckis and Hanks Continue Their Collaboration

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Forrest Gump, the first time that Zemeckis and Hanks worked together on a film. The 1994 classic earned Hanks an Academy Award for Best Actor, and Zemeckis won for Best Director. The two would team up for another legendary film, 2000’s Cast Away, which earned Hanks an Academy Award nomination, but ended up losing to Russell Crowe for Gladiator. In 2004, Hanks would star in The Polar Express, an adaptation of the popular children’s book of the same name written by Chris Van Allsburg. The film received mixed reviews at the time, but is often cited as a prime example of the uncanny valley effect, and apparently freaked out a segment of the audiences who watched it.

The most recent collaboration between the Oscar-winning duo, 2022’s Pinocchio, was not received well. Despite having an excellent cast that included Hanks, Joseph Gordon-Levit, and Angus Wright, the film was yet another failed Disney live-action adaptation of one of their popular animated films. It also didn’t help that it came out the same year as Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio, which was received much better by critics.
