FREEPORT, Fla. (WMBB) — Do you have a child in the public-school system falling behind in their reading level? The Florida Department of Education can help with the New Worlds Reading Program.
Florida’s free home literacy program will send enrolled families 12 books, one each month.
To be eligible, a child must be in a public-school program and not yet meeting age-appropriate reading levels.
Kids can choose which books they’ll receive each year based on what interests them.
To grow kids’ skills, new worlds reading offers free activities and reading guides to support each story.
“So we want our kids to continue reading not only at school, but at home, and encourages them academically to be successful at school. But also we want our kids to be on grade level so they’re successful in the future,” said Kristin Lewis, Freeport Elementary Principal
The program is for students from kindergarten to fifth grade.
Most eligible students were given a letter to enroll, but parents and guardians can also check with their students’ school district.
Applications for the New Worlds Reading program are due by June 10.
