Tesla Megafactory construction plan gets approval

Tesla’s Megafactory construction plan received approval from the Office of the Management Committee in Lingang New Area, China Pilot Free Trade Zone.

Local media reported that Tesla’s Megafactory will be located in Nanhui New Town, Pudong New Area, and cover an area of 204,359.92 square meters. Lu Yu, the Director of the high-tech Department of the Administration Committee of Lingang New Area, stated that Tesla’s Megafactory in China is expected to complete trial production in 2024. The Megapack factory is estimated to reach a production capacity of 40 GWh. Tesla Megapacks made in China will be sold in global markets.

Preliminary preparations for Tesla’s Megafactory site in China began in March. Construction on the Tesla Megafactory is expected to start this month, a little over a year after the company first announced the project. In April 2023, Tesla announced plans to produce 10,000 Megapacks per year in China. The company aims to start Megapack deliveries from the Megafactory in China by Q1 2025.

The Megafacotry in China could help Tesla reduce some costs in countries where demand for Megapacks is high, like Australia. In fact, last month, Neoen announced plans to expand the Collie Battery into a 560 MW/2,240 kWh system with Tesla Megapacks. The Collie Battery would triple in size, making it the biggest in Australia.

Tesla Megapack deployment reached an all-time high in Q1 2024

“The Megapack, in particular, reached an all-time high in Q1, leading to record profitability for the energy business, and that looks likely to continue to increase in the quarters and years ahead,” Musk said during the call. “It will increase—we actually know that it will—significantly faster than the car business, as we expected.”
