ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – If you’ve noticed an issue with ants, earwigs and other bugs this year, experts say it’s due to recent weather patterns.
“This time of year we have an influx, especially earwigs, earwigs kind of cycle themselves every couple years. So last year not so much, this year we have tons of them,” says Brian Spicer, Division Field Manger of Pearson Plumbing, Cooling, and Pest Control.
According to stateline exterminators, warmer spring conditions combined with an unseasonably warm winter, allow pests to thrive and that means they make more colonies and invade homes and businesses. However, as temperatures start to rise, the problem could get worse.
“They are going to start moving inside because they don’t like the hot weather just like we don’t, they have the same sort of body temperature gauge that we do. They like to be cool in the summer and warm in the winter time,” explains Jared Frank, the owner of Ready Pest Control.
Specialists say to stop the bug invasions, you’ll need to keep an eye on window screens, cracks and doors in your home.
“As a homeowner, you need to walk around the house and make sure all cracks and crevices are sealed,” says Spicer.
Experts say finding the source is the best way to stop the problem and if the insects are already in your home, you should consider calling pest control. Frank says often what you see is only 3% of the nest.
