The iconic 7.5-ton marble sculpture of a hand in downtown Santa Rosa has seen a lot of action since it was installed nearly 30 years ago.
Formally named “Agraria,” it has been climbed on by kids and teens, provided shelter, been smothered in black paint and pig’s blood, and probably eyeballed by a young mountain lion cruising its way through downtown.
But the sculpture, which was meant to honor local farmworkers, could be waving goodbye as the mall paves the way for the anticipated opening of a P.F. Chang’s restaurant.
Plans submitted to the city show a new driving lane with parking in front of the restaurant on the B Street side of Santa Rosa Plaza, right where the hand now sits.
A zoning meeting to discuss the project’s design review permit is scheduled for June 20. The restaurant itself isn’t due to open until later this winter.
Many residents took to social media not to discuss the addition of another parking lot on top of the mall’s other numerous parking areas, but to question what will happen to the statue that has long welcomed mall guests and served as a city landmark.
One Reddit user “findthefish14” wrote, “Oh hell no. I love that heckin statue.“
Mall representatives did not have additional details on the fate of the statue or additional project details. The sculpture’s artist, Larry Kirkland, could not immediately be reached for comment Monday afternoon.
Sculpted by nationally acclaimed artist Larry Kirkland, “Agraria” was installed at Santa Rosa Plaza’s B Street entrance in 1996. The 7.5-ton sculpture spans 12 feet from fingertip to severed wrist and stands about six feet tall.
According to his website, Kirkland’s artworks appear at Pennsylvania Station in New York; the American Red Cross Headquarters and National Academies of Science in Washington, D.C.; Putra World Trade Center in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; and Kansai International Airport in Osaka, Japan.
P.F. Chang’s will be on the north side of the B Street entrance in a space just under 5,000 square feet with an 800-square-foot enclosed, outdoor dining area.
