‘You’re Not Going to Do Me Wrong’: Jeremy Renner Explains Leaving Mission: Impossible Franchise
Former Mission: Impossible franchise star Jeremy Renner reveals a major reason he opted against returning to the popular action film series. According to the Oscar-nominated actor, director Christopher McQuarrie wanted to kill off his character in the franchise, William Brandt.
Speaking with Josh Horowitz via ActioNewz.com, Renner delved into why he departed the Mission: Impossible series after featuring as Brandt in Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation. According to Renner, McQuarrie asked him to come back for the 2018 installment, Fallout, to reprise his role. However, Renner would have only been on the Fallout set for one week, with Brandt appearing in the movie before being killed off, something the actor wasn’t enthused about. “I remember they tried to bring me over for a week so they could kill my character, and I was like, ‘No, you don’t get to do that. You’re not going to drag me over there and just kill my character,’ like get out of here!” he said. “If you’re going to do this, and you’re going to use my character, you’re going to do it right.”

Brandt was an important character in the Mission: Impossible series, an IMF intelligence analyst and aide who transitioned to the CIA once the IMF disbanded. Brandt was also seen as an heir to Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt as the IMF’s leader, though Renner refuted that claim, insisting Mission: Impossible “was always Tom’s show.” It was eventually hinted that Brandt retired from operative work after being absent from Fallout and Dead Reckoning. According to Renner, he felt the character deserved a better fate. “I yelled at [director Christopher McQuarrie],” he said with a laugh. “Dude, you’re not going to do this to me like that; you’re not going to do me wrong.”

Along with the prospect of his character being killed off, Renner previously cited family commitments for not returning to the Mission: Impossible film series, having had his daughter in the build-up to Rogue Nation. However, with his daughter growing older and given his love for the franchise, Renner teased a potential return if the right opportunity and story emerged.
